Dementia & the Holidays

The holiday season carries so many chapters in our hearts, faith, traditions, laughter, delicious meals, and cherished times together. But when someone in our family lives with Alzheimer’s or dementia, the familiar glow of the holidays can feel fragile. With thoughtful care and compassion, though, the season can become a time of connection, warmth, and quiet joy for everyone.

Here are gentle ways to help your loved one feel included, loved, and peaceful this season:

  • Honor their usual rhythm. Keeping as much of their daily routine intact, mealtimes, nap times, and favorite activities, can bring calm, even amid holiday activity.

  • Adapt with tenderness. Traditions are meaningful, but they can evolve. Swap a complex ritual for something simple but heartfelt, perhaps lighting one candle together or sharing a favorite memory aloud.

  • Invite them softly into preparations. Give small, manageable tasks they can enjoy, nestling ornaments, helping fold napkins, or choosing which holiday card to send. Their participation is a gift in itself.

  • Let decor reflect comfort, not clutter. Fewer ornaments or soft lighting can create a gentle, soothing environment. Choose a few meaningful pieces rather than overwhelming the senses.

  • Fill the air with familiar melodies. Gentle songs from their past can open doors to memory and elicit peaceful smiles. Music has a way of reaching us even in changed minds.

  • Keep outings brief and sweet. A short trip to see lights or a modest drive through a festive neighborhood can bring delight without wearing them down.

  • Offer a quiet refuge. Love also means knowing when to step back, creating a cozy nook with soft cushions, a familiar blanket, and calming items where your loved one can rest when the celebration feels like too much.

And don’t forget you, the caregiver, the family member, the one pouring your heart out. You deserve time to rest, replenish, and receive care, too. Let others help. It’s okay to say “no” to something that drains you. Your presence, calm, loving, and sincerity are among the greatest gifts you can bring.

This holiday season, may your home be filled with moments of light, connection, and warmth. May small gestures, shared glances, soft music, gentle touch, be reminders that love lives in the little things. And may you and your loved one discover peace together, even in a changing world.
